Distressed in Delhi

So well call me a sentimental old fop. Go on do it!It's absolutely true! I’m at this moment actually moping the loss of a very amicable young woman. My gal-pal, fashion adviser and Virgo-in-good-standing, Ritz has deigned it agreeable to marry and move to B'bay. Of all the fucked up luck. Just when I was finally ready to make lifelong commitment to "dumbindelhi" she's gone and tipped the bloody scales again. Will my recent seesawing to and fro never cease. So I’m making another list. A list of reasons why I love this here city. (...lurve you too my baby doll b'bay...let others call you Mumbai, you'll always be b'bay to me)

a) My most awesome foster parents. Vee and Tee. You guys rock!
b) The wide open spaces..(and I mean the indoors...the walls in the cubbyholes most people call homes in b’bay almost close up on you!)
c) The wide open spaces (outdoors this time) and four laned roads
d) Tikkas and galauti kababs and aloo tikkis and pakodas and junk.
e) Sarojini Nagar. Fashion street hath no stirrings.
f) My own apartment. Love the living by myself. It takes one bad marriage to teach you the true value of independence. Really.
g) Ritz (woe is me..she’ll be gone soon...*striking madhubala in distress pose*), Sam, Puchie, Shal, Vinu, Nomzi, Jeeju and of course the Fabulous Indi Auntie without who I’d be lost as a babe in the woods!
h) The Delhi winters. Positively my best time of the year.
i) The madcap Diwali card sessions.
j) Pool Parties and Barbeques!!!!!
k) Goosy Jossip! This town is a seething hot-pot of voracious gossip mongers. Awesome fun when it isn’t you they’re talking about!

...the list goes on and on and on. But I’m also going to put in a minilist of why I’m tempted to move back to B'bay. (It’s a Libran thing...balance you see!)

a) My most awesome real parent. Mom, you rock!!!
b) Nish-pish,( Love her to ittle-bittle pieces this one!)
c) The Beach! Just the sound of the sea...A true-blue Bambaiya wouldn’t dare risk a dip!
d) Sunila, Ramesh, Milya, Sups, Uga and other infamous party animals!
e) Paani Puri, Vada Pav, Misal, Mahesh Lunch Home, and moms cooking.
f) The monsoon. (Delhi monsoon season lasts like four hours…and that’s a good year!)
g) Colaba Causeway. The ultimate in junk!
h) Indigo Brunches.
i) Late night antakshari singing at worli seaface.
j) Strawberries and cream at Bachelors!
k) The double decker bus rides. (Haven’t been on a bus yet in Delhi and don’t ever intend to be!)
l) Marine Drive.

Sigh. All this reminiscing is making me homesick. I leave for B'bay tomorrow and shall at long last be reunited with lightofmylife Nish-pish in our ever vigilant search for more InaneChatter (TM, patent pending) and the veritable GoodTimes. Until then...Cheers!!!!

...wedding bells or funeral march? who can tell!

Yup, it's happened. My life's finally been sorted out. Apparently I'm stubborn and not prepared to change; I'm far too independent so I couldn't possibly have a successful relationship because wanting my own space/time is not what men want you to want! So there. I've been pegged and filed away. At least now I know what’s wrong so I can go about fixing it (hah! I know what’s wrong and I intend to keep it that way!) !!!

But, while I'm whiling away my time being foot-loose and fancy-free others around me have been hard at work getting hitched! The past few weeks have been filled with flurried activity really. With Ritz ad Nirav (mah closest and bestest friend through the harrowing years at art school) both tying the knot on Saturday (not with each other though!) my life is now a blur of whattowears, wheretogoes, whattogetems and once again whattowears. But during this verry verry important phase, I’ve come across some tidbits of news that promise to keep me really entertained. The gossip cup hath literally runeth over! Mahkupishfull! (oh where would we be without pillow talk? Single…of course! Duh!) There was the bit about a certain someone once close to my heart (ergo me!) and another story about some viley bi-atch! So we'll go with the heart one (ergo my heart, ergo me!) first! Okay, so this guy (let's call him “Chirkut Kumar”), decided to “make an honest woman” of another girl this year (for the record, I've heard only good things about her, bless her soul!) and with promises of no less than “till death do us part” mind you! So all was well until, a little bird whispered in mah ear that the wedding, for some reason was post-poned! Now what information could this sweet, albeit somewhat gullible (..she's marrying Chirkut.. dammit!) girl have been recently privy to, to make her skittish?

The fabulous Nish-pish and I toiled away furiously for a whole ten minutes and here's a list of the top “fie” reasons we came up with! (two minutes each!)

a) That he was still in lurve with his ex.
b) His income status. (not much to talk about here)
c) His fabulous trusting nature (cut through the sarcasm)
d) His taste for the anal..(ahem!) (and now of course, he can't respect her!)
e) The real value of a certain bauble he got her…(this one was contributed by Nish-pish'es husband dearest in one of his brilliant spells!)

Well, all in all, we wish Chirkut luck in all his future endeavors and move on to our next subject, the certain viley bi-atch! (let's call her...err...Premlata). Now Premlata lives in her own imaginary world with her own imaginary friends. And one day our little Premlata imagines that she can get away with (oh the size of the ego on that girl!) bitching about her imaginary friends to THEIR own real friends. Now little does our little heroine know that she’s been caught out. So if you’ve been naughty this week and think we didn’t know about it...watch out little Premlata. Cos we’re coming to get ya!

Ok so now…I’m off. Need to get the gossip bug a break and chat “nuclearfusion” and “worldpeace” with Nish. See you pholks!

The Stuff of Life

Last night was something else. What with the fabulouso food and the ambiance and the amorous quantities of alcohol (perfect recipe for great party) But the best part of the evening was probably Ritzi’s performance at her own little impromptu “dholki” session. It’s amazing how excited the girl is about getting married. I mean it’s almost infectious. She’s totally on “bridemode that girl! We sang and danced and made total asses of ourselves. I also managed to get a clip of her doing a little Punjabi gaana which I’m planning to put up for auction..(hehehe blackmail material for my retirement fund) All in all a great evening. Geetu whipped up this absolutely fabulous biryani for dinner that just did a whole meltinyourmouth routine. Seven thumbs up all around. En-jai!

InaneChatter

So, it’s past eight and yet again I’m stuck at my stupid office getting stuff together for an unnaturally small amounts of hard cash. As that very wise woman once said…if incoming ever bes more than outgoing, you’re not having as much fun as you could be! Hell...I’m having waaaay more fun than I should, believe me! So I’m off now. Gotta go home and get ready for another fun night of dinner, drink and dance (the stuff of life!). Will just about manage to fit in two of my three customary changes before I’m satisfied ( Hah! Like THAT’S ever going to happen!!(..that very wise woman is the same one who said you can’t ever be too thin or too rich) (…it just occured to me…are parenthesis inside parenthesis a crime?..and if so will multiple brackets cancel each other out? ( d&p for the day dude!!!))) with my hips. Oops...kinda lost my chain of thought in there somewhere. A thousand apologies, kind bloggees! And so…I go!

Hoeing In Himachal

Ok…so for all those who were waiting for the update on Nish’s most extreme adventure, (*drum roll*) heeeeeere it is, supplemented with pictures of course. Apart from the usual Brunches (beer + lunches), and InaneChatter, this little phase also saw the springingforth of the formerly underrated term “DUDE!!!” (which, by the way, when uttered in the right frequency and modulation, can fit almost any occasion.) and the for the persnickety, "Hoeing in Himachal". (Ref : I was working, not Hoeing in Himachal you know!)We got all the stuff on her schedule in, plus some fabulouso clothes (thanks Sammy, Nish hearts you too!!) and deepandprofound conversation to boot! We Chilled at Casbah, were Exultant at Elevate and even Giggled at the Gymkhana before we Moseyed over to Mojo. Was AbsolutelyFabulous, if I do say so myself.

My Papa Bear

It's been a while since I started this blog, really, and I'm appalled at the fact that there isn't one single article dedicated to my most bestest papa bear Tarun. Needless to say he's a BIG (hee hee heee *evil laugh*) influence in my ever-so-changing life and I'd be absolutely lost without him. Here we are at TGIF all smiles and whiskey sours! Cheers!

Supri's awesome lunch party!!

Well, Supri finally sent me the pictures she took in Delhi. These were taken at my house at a lazy Sunday lunch. Supri made an awesome chicken curry..(amazing considering she used only ingrediants she found in my kitchen!!!) and stuffed capsicum which went really well with the beer and vodka starters. Rock on babe!

...of doggies and diapers

Today started off with a bang. Desoto needed to be taken to the vet. The poor baby was listless and whiney. Why me? you ask…well, apart from being birth-mom (I bought vee that dog as a belated b’day gift) and play mate, I also have the added privilege of being secondary care-giver..(yea, I watch oprah too you know) So off to the vet we went little dachshund and I, until, in the car he started with those dry heaves that prelude the actual spewing forth of breakfast. After another fifteen minutes of frenzied “stop and go” action, it turned out, blessedly, that he only had the hiccups, but the fear of what might have transpired was enough to get me up and racing. Dent-in-the-pocket-formerly-known-as-Desoto sure managed to run up a huge bill at the vet. Routine de-worming, paw nail clipping, new doggie food (baby’s bored of pedigree puppy), anti-fungal shampoo (..great smell and easy on their eyes) and other sundry….oh the list is endless. I sure as hell managed to give Varsha a gift that keeps on giving her bills! Kinda makes me rethink the whole “having a baby” thingy that I’m so keen on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Maybe when “fabulous coozhin nish-pish” decides to go-forth-and-multiply, I could maybe live vicariously on that front as well..(she’s already doing her bit, what with the sex and all). I’m sure I’ll make an amazing god-aunt. No really. I would. In all probability , I’ll be the “hip” aunt that hands out the condoms and gives my niece (I’m pushing for a girl) cash on her birthdays (..wish I’d had one of those!!) She’ll run to me the first time she runs away from home, run to me with her boy troubles and I’d give her a patient hearing and a shoulder to cry on. Siiiigh! I love babies…there’s something about the whole “Johnson’s baby powder smell” that gets me all soppy and maternal these days. Maybe there is a biological clock after all. Suddenly (and by that I mean over the past couple of months) I find myself at this weird juncture where stretch marks and labour pains don’t seem as scary as they once did. Brrrrrrrrr (shaking myself out of reverie) Maybe I need to go spend some more time with Varsha’s dogs and have them pee on my shoes or something. I’m talking crazy!!!!

On a brighter note, Nish-pish gets into town today. So far her flight’s been delayed for an entire hour..(it’s a lot when you’re counting the seconds, trust me!). Also, if I’m not blogging for a while, you know I’m probably just having too much fun to be bothered! Cheers!

Here’s a picture of us at her wedding, and another one with her daughter “kiara”. Love you jaan! Muuuuuuuaaaaaaaahhh.

...my ancient Pad-Thai Recipe (a.k.a. Addendum to nish-pish...domestic goddess)

You'll need :
-- 3 cups flat rice noddles
-- 1/2 cup chicken meat (lamb if you prefer, but increase cooking time accordingly), sliced into small strips
-- 4 largish shrimp, 2 eggs
-- 1/3 cup soya bean curd (or paneer), cut into small slivers
-- 1 pickled white radish (i soak it in a half sugar/half vinegar solution), chopped
-- 1/2 cup cooking oil
-- 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
-- 1 teaspoon shallots or onion chopped
-- 1 teaspoon ground dry red chilli or paprika (...more if you want it spicy)
-- 4 teaspoons sugar
-- 4 tablespoons fish sauce (vegetarians can use a light soy sauce instead)
-- 4 tablespoons vinegar
-- 1/2 cup bean sprouts
-- 1/3 cup spring onion, chopped to 1.5" pieces
-- 1 lime, for garnishing
-- 1/4 cup cabbage,sliced thinly for garnishing
-- 4 tablespoons roughly ground roasted peanuts (don't need so much really, but i love peanuts!)

Method
This is a fairly easy recipe. Fry the chopped garlic and onions till they turn light brown. Add chicken and fry until cooked. Pour in the shrimp, pickled white radish, soya bean curd. Break the eggs into the pan and scramble. Add sugar, fish sauce, vinegar, ground dry red chilli and stir well. Pour in the noodles, stir-fry until mixed well, add spring onion, 3/4 of half a cup of bean sprouts (the remainder, use for garnishing) and stir-fry until cooked. Spoon onto platter. Garnish with ground roasted peanuts, bean sprouts, carrots, cabbage and sliced lime. I haven't made this in a bit though, so if you think you know better, go ahead and variate! (The trick however is to get the right consistency, the noodles have to be moist yet not curried!)

my pad thai

...glory days!

Have had an amazing weekend. What with one anniversary and two birthdays to celebrate. Here's some of the stuff I did...

...danced my ass off on Friday night at Meenu's house warming do.
...crammed fabulous Pad Thai down my throat in an attempt to store calories to last over the nine days of fasting to come..(I don't really fast...but hey, any excuse will do!)
...attended traditional style Pooja at Ritz's (this prettty much does in my quota of "dharmic" activities for the year!)
...also sat through a "dholki" session at Ritz's, which was fun, cos riti translated most of the punjabi gaanas for me. Got palms all red from clapping along.
...got in quality gossip time with Ritz and Sam. (Gawd! I'm going to miss that girl when she moves to Bombay!!!!)
...attended dinner party at Shals as "Jennifer Lopez". Rocking Hyderabadi khana. She's one amazing hostess, that woman. Love her to pieces!
...played with Varsha's dogs (ultimate de-stressing activity...except for when they're naughty and rip my trousers!!...bad doggies!)

So now it's back to work...which i'll eventually get to, just as soon as I'm done with this entry...K, I'm done!

World's Wost Love Letter...

yea well...thanks to the one moronic mail i got, i went looking for more....and here's what my internet search spewed forth. Maybe i will call A****h after all!...

Dear Bertha,

I lack the bravery and endurance requisite to face you with my feelings, so I am writing this letter to you in the hopes that you can read it.
I remember the first time I saw you. I don't know if I was attracted to you because of your radiant personality, your sunny disposition, or your gravitational pull. All I know is that once I got close to you, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't leave.
And I think back to some of the trials and tribulations in our relationship. Like that time you tried on that thong bikinni you said you would look terrible in. I'm truely impressed by the bravery it took to even try it in light of how right you were.
And I know it makes you uncomfortable that I sometimes hang out with your ex, but your cousin and I hardly ever discuss you and when we do, it is always positive.
Every day while I am working in the sewage treatment plant, all I can think of is you. When I found that ring I gave to you floating through, I knew it must have been divine intervention that had kept us together so long.
When I talk to my friends about you, they all agree, you're "a whole lot of woman". I couldn't have said it better myself.

With what I think is probably love,
Bryant

...nishishcoming!!!!

..and so once again it that time of the month! My "epitome-of overall-fabulousness" little coozhin (..she may be older...but i'm taller! So there!) Nish-pish is coming to town...and all i can reallly say is "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!" I'm soooooooo excited, really, it absolutely bes the absolute highlight of my year so far! Six days to go, nishy! muuuaaaaaaaahhhh to you!
And while i'm posting, here's another little trifling of paraphernalia for the amusement of all my dedicated blog-reading-fans..(...ooo i do think i've perfected the art of self back-patting!!!) This was a mail sent to me a while ago by ...how to put it delicately???...an "interested party"? Read it and weep..(why, oh why must i attract such nerds???)

Dear Rashmee

I have not been made to feel more miserable than this for having said a simple Hello.
If a Hello makes you suspect my motives then it’s best I clarify.
When I saw you in T***** bhaia’s wedding I was attracted to you. Since nothing is without reason, there has to be a reason to this too.
What it is is difficult for me to put in words. If I try, part of the reason could be my perception of what I’d heard about you from him. And then the presence of the person himself.
The long, the short and the all of it are that this could end as a passing encounter. AND this could turn into a lasting friendship. It is up to you.
I’m not telling you that I’ve fallen for you or any such nonsense. But I’d like to know you. The fact is I still can’t believe I’m doing all this but I’m doing this nonetheless.
You could ask me to get lost on 98290-6***8 OR you could toss back a simple Hello and lend me back my dignity of a response.
And V*** ***, women like you are a rarity. I respect you for your skill.

A****h.

...and then my friends wonder why i'm still single!! Poochie....Help!!!

My Friend Sam!!!!!!

Once upon a time, far far away, there was a little girl who moved to a new city after a rather painful divorce. She was a lonely little girl with no friends, no family...(not even her stupendous and fabulous coozhin Nish)...and one day she got sooo bored she thought she would die! And just as she was on the verge of a rather sordid 'death-by-boredom', the mysterious "door-to-happenstance" opened and there in stood Sam! They shook hands, shared a bunch of rather drunken laughs and a 'deepandprofound' friendship sprung forth. To this day my friend Sam stands firm as an ideal of courage, conviction and all-over-fabulousness. And if he doesn't manage to post comment on my blog now....all articles hence shall be written posthumously!!!..(and by that i mean after YOUR death Sam!!! Yea you...i'm talking to you!)

Also, as Sam so sweetly pointed out in one of our MSN chats, it's been nearly a year since we've known each other. Happy Anniversary (9th April) Sammy baby!!Muuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaah! I heart you!

Thrilling Thursday

It's a brand new day! The sky is blue, I'm wearing my new linen trousers (they were a bargain too!), I've lost a kilo in the last week, my deadlines have been met - okay, nearly - and I'm happy. And it shows.

And then, I walk into the office and Jeej actually asks me why I'm so happy. Wow! Am I really that transparent? At the grand old age of "oldenoughtoknowbetter", I must now attempt to gain an air of mystery!

I don't do mysterious very well though. I'm too hopeless. I'm transparent as Pamela Anderson's t-shirt in a car wash! I crave depth. Depth and mystery. I've got a degree, I can converse with company directors and look like I know what the hell they're talking about, I've had a bad marriage, I should have depth dammit!

But really, deep down, under my somewhat scary exterior (apparently, women with a sense of humour and red streaks are scary, according to a "friend") there is someone who can be cheered up with little things. Little things like an uninterrupted hour to watch a favourite sitcom, breakfast in bed, good news, an unexpected compliment, an email from a friend, a smile from a good-looking stranger or even piping hot 'pakodas' on a rainy day.

Today is one of those days. And I'm walking on air!

Plus , you know how it is...a positive attitude may not always work, but it annoys enough people around me to make it worth my while!

...bored!

It's past seven and once again i'm stuck at the office post closing time. It's getting to be quite a pain really. Had a meeting planned at 7.30 but the client called and postponed it to 8.30 now. Will in all probability call and postpone it further to tomorrow morning anyways. In the mean time I suffer the wait and tear my hair out.
Am so irritated, I may kill someone today. If I don't post on here for a while, and you hear news reports of an enraged graphic artist going beserk with a palette knife, causing untold damage to little old ladies trying to cross the streets, you'll know where I am.

Red-dye to go!

OK, I now have streaks. Bright red strawberry streaks...(or at least they were before Holi!)

I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed, but let's just say that if I were 'my stupendous & fabulous cousin Nish', it might have been said that 'my stupendous & fabulous cousin Nish thought that it was impossible for me to ever get streaked', so I'm actually sort of changing.

All this means, really, is that I spend a fair amount of time trying to decide what the best angle is for my red streaks (nish would have guessed red though) to fall gracefully off my head and what the proper distance should be between the onlooker and the streak in question to facilitate effective viewing. Though it is at all times a work in progress, the current state of assessment and reassessment has resulted in a sort of a permanent tilting of my neck almost akin to my tv viewing angle (..this everyone who's ever been in the same movie hall or classroom or watched tv with me will know!)

Add to this my new rash of actually wearing colours and you get the new and only slightly improved mee!

At this point, I think that it's necessary to point out that this is not actually the first time I've done this sort of thing...the other times being a slight bit (yea right!) more extreme (yooohooo..remember the crew cuts??)

Mostly, I suppose that I did this because I could, as it ultimately really doesn't make much of a difference what I look like frankly (being the fabulous me that me ish!) -everyone is going to stare, one way or another. The philosophy behind the streaked look had more to do with trying to do something that might have beeen used as character defination..(oh that's the girl with the streaks.. can't miss her!) but that plan pretty much blew up in my face..duh!

So after all that I guess I'm just going to wait for the grey to start showing again and its back to the old "BARBAR". Hey I tried it and I'm knocking!....and I'm sticking with Garnier. Natural Brown.

Bug's Eye View...

Yea yea...some might say i'm all excited by this whole writing on my blog thingy, but i say to hell with them. I have some time on my hands and its well spent filling up this here blank space..(although technically it isn't really blank to begin with...but who cares!). Plus i found this brilliant little anecdote (mainly cos i came up with it!) that i want to post. It's a clip of a conversation that i had with my most stupendously fabulous cousin, the amazing nish-pish and it goes something ike this...

Rushes : who?
Nish : Give goosy jossip
Rushes : no sweetie..
Nish : that closet **censored**?
Nish : serious ??? he really is **censored**?
Nish : how did he manage to hook up with **censored**?
Rushes : i dunno
Nish : aaargh - the thought - now my whole day is ruined wth visual
Rushes : thats what most of **censored** thinks so....
Rushes : you know...people talk
Nish : hehehehe
Rushes : hehehehe
Nish : this is **censored** we're talking about!!
Rushes : we stick with the majority
Nish : hehehheheheee
Rushes : It's the 'heard instinct', sweetie
Rushes : If i heard it, it must be true!
Nish : Hear hear..
Rushes : ..or so I heard..hehehehhe

footnote: the above extract is just to show you how brilliant we are and is in no way meant to communicate the exact nature of our conversation. Soon after this we went on to discuss nuclear fusion, world peace and the Government's Economic Policy.
